ondatropica fuses traditional colombian styles such as cumbia, gaita and champeta with boogaloo, ska, beat-box, mcs, dub and funk to create a progressive album that re-interprets the tropical musical heritage of colombia with new approaches in composition, arrangement and production. artists such as fruko, anibal velasquez, michi sarmiento, alfredito linares and wilson viveros (to name a few) joined a group of younger colombian musicians, including members of both marios band frente cumbeiro and quantics combo barbaro, to (re)generate the excitement that positioned colombian music as one of the most influential in south america.

with another release that is made to be a soundtrack for sunny open air scenarios, acker records keeps living up to its name and pays tribute to the current summer season. in doing so, the label from mecklenburg one more time steps out of the line, since this release again distinguishes itself by a refreshing otherness. light and easy piano plonking as well as the lascivious french voice of singer rebecca dominate the atmosphere of ici, while its minimal electronic groove discreetly remains in the background. a really tropical feeling evolves in the long version of this track when playful synthesiser chords give rise to the idea of a steel drum. in his remix, mollono.bass manages to combine the very song-orientated approach of the original with a bouncy electronic arrangement. thus he not only creates a lot of dance floor thrust, but also provides the perfect link to rather conventional productions.

tony ollivierras issued a generous number of singles and eps under the ibex moniker on rushhour, planet e, yore, and his own ibex music, and now follows up his 2010 yore release, meltdown, with absolution, though this time under his birth name. no matter: ollivierras music sounds great, whether issued under his real name or an alias, and absolution is no exception. the infectious title cut gets things moving with a bass-powered blend of claps and funky rhythms before chunky house chords and silken synth figures add to the tracks multi-layered splendour. a jazzier dimension rises to the surface of quick release when the tunes churning hi-hats are joined by royally swinging electric piano playing and luscious synth pads.phase down opts for a purer deep house sound in its focus on kick drums, claps, and futuristic synths, though the track proves that ollivierras naturally funky side cant help but emerge, here as it does elsewhere.

tresor records are pleased to present s_w_z_k, the new project from david brown aka swayzak. whilst the name remains identifiable, s_w_z_k presents a clear departure from his work with james taylor who recently left the legendary production duo.

tireless producer, tronic boss and top international dj christian smith here steps up for his first release on plus 8. over the years christian has offered up a high volume and high quantity of techno inclined singles for myriad labels (bedrock, systematic, 100percent pure, soma), so it only makes sense he now finds himself on one of the scenes most reliable outposts for such material. the two track ep kicks off with house is house which is, as the name suggests, a little house-ier than the flip, but still deals in plenty of heavy bass weight and slick repetition. the devil is in the detail filtered, dark voices, rattling cowbells, washes of white noise synths and long, thin, forward looking pads - all of which are married to a mid-tempo groove. the more forceful indulge me then follows. taught kick drums start immediately as claps and subtle synth stabs swell in volume until they eventually fill out the whole airwaves. squirming behind are thin and icy steel lines until the first drop when the deliciously bouncy groove sets in proper. far from aping the usual detroit and chicago tropes, christian smith has once again crafted two classy dance floor joints that are not only exquisitely produced, but that bare all the usual hallmarks of christian smith, one of the most consistent producers in the game.
